Crossing the Sea: Bringing China’s Vetmaster THR Masterclass to the 9th Busan Veterinary Conference
Just a couple of weeks ago, in late August 2026, I crossed the sea to South Korea alongside my longtime colleague Dr. Dongxing Xu to lead the 2nd Korea Vetmaster Total Hip Replacement (THR) Masterclass, hosted at the 9th Busan Veterinary Conference (BEXCO). Following our sold-out Seoul workshop last year, this two-day intensive seminar drew immense interest from the Korean orthopedic community, selling out within weeks of its July opening. Backed by the milestone of having surpassed 1,000 THR cases earlier this year, I joined distinguished Korean surgeons from Leaders Animal Medical Center to deliver a complete theoretical and practical curriculum—from implant architecture and multi-angular femoral anteversion metrics to live surgical demonstrations. This journey proved once again that Chinese veterinary orthopedics—our domestic pride or "Guohuo ZhiGuang"—is actively setting international standards through sheer clinical precision.
Carrying the Craft to Bangkok: Feline Total Hip Replacement Keynote at the 17th VPAT Congress
In June 2025, I had the honor of stepping onto the keynote stage in Bangkok at the 17th VPAT (Veterinary Practitioner Association of Thailand) Congress to present our clinical work on Feline Total Hip Replacement (THR). Delivering an extensive keynote entirely in English to hundreds of veterinary surgeons and university professors from across Southeast Asia was a fresh and deeply rewarding milestone. Feline hip arthroplasty is a demanding frontier requiring microscopic precision to match tiny acetabula, stovepipe femurs, and extreme jumping biomechanics. Sharing our biological dual-mobility protocols and long-term recovery data was about more than mechanics—it was about proudly representing the clinical heritage of South China Agricultural University (SCAU) and proving that Chinese veterinary innovation is ready to elevate standards and relieve animal suffering wherever it is needed.
A Grassroots Surgeon Bound for Moscow: April 2023 and the First Keynote by a Chinese Practicing Veterinarian
In the spring of 2023, a long-delayed envelope arrived that marked a quiet historical threshold for Chinese veterinary medicine: an official invitation to deliver a keynote on canine total hip replacement at the Russian International Veterinary Congress in Moscow. The trip had been frozen for two years during the pandemic, but in April 2023, the flight path was cleared. Standing as the first practicing small animal orthopedic clinician from mainland China invited to address their assembly, I packed my slides with one mission: to showcase the raw surgical caliber and objective data of China's frontline practitioners. As for delivering a complex orthopedic lecture entirely in English? I shrugged and laughed: "Giving the talk is my job; whether they can follow my English is entirely their problem!"
Snow in Moscow, Sparks on the Podium: Keynote Reflections from the Russian Veterinary Congress
Back in December 2024, I traveled across Eurasia to the snow-blanketed capital of Russia with a focused academic mission: presenting seven years of clinical breakthroughs in canine knee reconstruction to our international colleagues. At the Partners Science Forum Annual Veterinary Congress in Moscow, I shared our Chinese surgical protocols and biological total knee arthroplasty (TKA) data with hundreds of Russian practitioners. The congress concluded with an unexpected and humbling honor: being presented with the Professional Excellence Award for surgical breakthroughs—an accolade I joked that I hadn't even achieved back home in China. But beyond the standing ovations and heated biomechanical debates, what anchored this journey in my heart was something purely personal: as a surgeon born and raised in subtropical Guangzhou, this trip was the very first time in my entire life that I saw falling snow.
