Running barefoot through the red dirt of southern China is one of the foundational memories of my childhood. Curiously, that very "barefoot" mentality has defined my entire twenty-three-year surgical career. Looking back—from a boy running without sandals in rural pastures to an orthopedic surgeon operating on thousands of joint cases and speaking on international stages—I have watched Chinese veterinary medicine evolve from a technological blank slate into an over-capitalized corporate battlefield. Over the years, the establishment has labeled me everything from an "unorthodox heretic" to an "academic authority." Neither label matters to me in the slightest. What matters is standing your ground, keeping your surgical craft pure, and remembering that a barefoot craftsman with solid hands has nothing to fear from those weighed down by glossy shoes.
