Surgical Craftsman · Clinical Scientist · Lifelong Geek

Dr. Zhongheng Wu, Ph.D.

“I have spent over two decades at the operating table, yet I still approach every bone cut with the exact same reverence as my very first case. To me, surgery is an uncompromising craft where physics, biology, and medical ethics converge.”

Born and raised in Guangzhou, my lifelong passion for clinical surgery led me to South China Agricultural University (SCAU), where I completed fifteen rigorous years of undergraduate, master's, and full-time doctoral studies in veterinary clinical surgery. As one of China's inaugural licensed veterinarians (2010), I chose early on to dedicate my career to the demanding realm of small animal orthopedics.

From mastering biological joint replacement in Cremona, Italy, to surpassing the 1,000-case milestone in Total Hip Replacements (THR) and pioneering 3D-printed biological Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) in China, my baseline has never wavered: no commercial gimmicks, no unnecessary surgeries—only verifiable science and a lifetime of pain-free motion for every patient.

TWENTY-THREE YEARS AT THE SURGICAL TABLE

The Evolution of a Surgical Craftsman

Becoming an orthopedic specialist was never a calculated corporate trajectory; it was twenty-three years of grinding through frontline clinical puzzles, learning from complex revisions, and refusing to settle for obsolete techniques. Here are the four defining chapters that shaped my hands.

2003 – 2010

Grassroots Apprenticeship & Licensing

Frontline Surgery & SCAU Studies

I began in 2003 as an entry-level assistant in a Guangzhou clinic, pulling retractor blades and scrubbing tables. Dedicating myself to veterinary surgery at SCAU, I passed China's inaugural national licensing examination in 2010, laying my foundation in raw, unglamorous clinical practice.

2011 – 2016

The SAO Movement & Cremona Awakening

Italian Mentorship & Doctoral Research

Seeing the void in structured orthopedic training in China, I co-founded SAO to share clinical techniques nationwide. In 2013, I traveled alone to Cremona, Italy, to study Total Hip Replacement under Dr. Aldo Vezzoni, pioneering the introduction of biological joint replacement into mainland China.

2017 – 2021

Founding Boshi & Pioneering 3D TKA

SPECIALIST CENTER & CUSTOM 3D ARTHROPLASTY

In 2019, I founded Guangzhou Boshi Animal Hospital as a dedicated orthopedic referral center. Collaborating with SCAU and material scientists, we engineered China's first biological knee system and performed a certified world-first custom 3D-printed canine TKA in 2021.

2022 – 2026

1,000+ Joint Milestone & Standards

Pioneering Standards & Global Podiums

Surpassing 1,000 Total Hip Replacements and 50+ Total Knee Arthroplasties, my focus expanded to industry-wide safety. I led the drafting of China's landmark veterinary hip implant standard (T/GDAAV 1011–2024) and shared Chinese clinical data on international podiums in Moscow, Seoul, and Bangkok.

CREMONA ROOTS & MENTORSHIP LEGACY

Under the Guidance of a World Master: The Italian Awakening

In 2013, I packed my bags and traveled alone from Guangzhou to Cremona, Italy, in search of the highest standard in veterinary joint replacement. That journey permanently transformed my hands and my surgical philosophy.

Arriving in Cremona—an ancient town renowned for handcrafted violins—I spoke no Italian and had only Guangzhou high school English. Staying in a modest suburban hotel, I rented a bicycle and rode ten minutes along cobblestone alleys to SCIVAC every morning. As the first practicing veterinarian from mainland China to attend this rigorous biological THR certification, I spent nights cross-referencing surgical terms in a pocket dictionary, determined to prove that Chinese clinicians could excel in the world's most exacting techniques.

My mentor, Dr. Aldo Vezzoni—the undisputed world record holder with over 5,000 total hip replacements—opened my eyes to the living nature of orthopedics. He taught me that bone is not an inert mechanical scaffolding to be forced, but a "living sculpture" that remodels, responds, and integrates with the biological implant. Watching him reconstruct hips in severe canine deformities—and successfully performing the world’s first biological THR on an 8-year-old, 93kg Malayan tiger named "Girl"—taught me that surgical precision knows no biological ceiling.

Over the years, I returned for five specialized clinical training attachments at Vezzoni's clinic. As my own surgical practice surpassed the 1,000-case milestone, I realized that true mentorship is not about chasing numbers; it is about carrying his uncompromising rigor and reverence for life back to China. Every time a patient stands up from my operating table and takes its first pain-free steps, that spirit of craftsmanship endures.

“Bone is not an inert scaffolding; it is a living sculpture that remodels and lives with the implant.”

INSTITUTIONAL RIGOR & APPLIED INNOVATION

Academic Appointments, National Standards & Applied Patents

I have always believed that clinical breakthroughs must not remain confined to private operating theaters. By training university veterinary students, establishing China's pioneering group standards for veterinary implants, and patenting clinical tools, my team and I bridge frontline surgery with national higher education and advanced biomedical manufacturing.

HIGHER EDUCATION · TEXTBOOK AUTHOR

University Appointments & National Curriculum

Appointed as Visiting Lecturer at South China Agricultural University (SCAU) and Guangdong Polytechnic of Science and Trade (GPST), and Visiting Professor at Jiangsu Agri-Animal Husbandry Vocational College (JSVC). I authored the official chapter on "Canine and Feline Hip Replacement" for the national university textbook Pet Surgery and Obstetrics.

INDUSTRY BENCHMARK · T/GDAAV 1011—2024

Lead Drafter: Veterinary Hip Implant Standard

Addressing regulatory voids in veterinary hardware, I united Guangzhou Boshi, SCAU, and the Guangdong Academy of Sciences Institute of New Materials to author China's benchmark group standard T/GDAAV 1011–2024 (Surgical Implants—Technical Specifications for Veterinary Hip-Joint Replacement Implants), establishing scientific baselines for biocompatibility, fatigue testing, and manufacturing rigor.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY · 15+ PATENTS

15+ Authorized Patents & Clinical Translation

Co-inventor of 15+ authorized national invention and utility model patents covering 3D-printed trabecular bone ingrowth, anti-dislocation dual-mobility mechanisms, and specialized orthopedic instrumentation. I reject "paper-only" patents; every single authorization is engineered to solve real clinical failure modes in the operating room.

BEYOND THE SCALPEL · INTELLECTUAL PASSIONS

The Geometry of the Cosmos, the Ocean Depths & Precision Mechanics

People often ask why an orthopedic surgeon spends freezing nights on an urban balcony capturing photons from millions of light-years away, or trains to descend thirty meters into the ocean on a single breath. The truth is simple: I have always remained a kid driven by unquenchable curiosity. Whether deciphering the crystal lattice of a gemstone, the escapement of a mechanical watch, or the biological ingrowth of living bone, the joy of deconstructing fundamental physical mechanics is entirely identical.

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY · DEEP SKY

Capturing Deep-Sky Photons: 90APO Narrowband Imaging

On my urban balcony in Guangzhou, I spend clear nights polar-aligning equatorial mounts and stacking 18+ hours of narrowband exposures. Resolving the ionized filaments of the NGC7635 Bubble Nebula or the spiral arms of Andromeda (M31) remains my ultimate lesson in cosmic humility.

OCEAN EXPLORATION · PADI DIVE MASTER

Single-Breath Abyss: 30m Freediving & 4-Min Apnea

After earning my credentials through the full PADI scuba continuum to Divemaster, I sought raw stillness through freediving. Certified at Level 2, I trained to achieve a 4-minute static apnea and descend beyond 30 meters on a single breath—discovering absolute mental focus in the quiet deep.

MINERALOGY & HOROLOGY · CRAFTSMANSHIP

Crystal Lattices & Mechanical Horology

To understand materials from the atomic lattice up, I earned certification as a National Gemstone Appraiser. Examining precision watch escapements and micro-gears under a loupe closely mirrors orthopedic surgery: both require absolute fidelity to structural truth.
